Permian heart surgeon Sergei Sukhanov has conducted more than 20,000 open heart surgeries. He proved that the Permian region requires its own cardio industry, and in the middle of the 2000s a modern cardio center was meant to be established. Despite the substantial state funds invested in its construction, the handover of the center kept getting delayed. The project had to contend with regional bureaucrats, and Professor Sukhanov continued his work in the old hospital, a 200 year old manor. At the end of 2011 he received the surprising proposal from the Kremlin: to head Vladimir Putin‘s election campaign.
