The Toxic Avenger (WA)

TOXIC AVENGER is one of the most successful films released by the infamous Troma Entertainment, known in the 1980s for producing low-budget B movies. Troma has cult status but that doesn’t make the film any better or more bearable.

More

Troma was a production company that made low-budget Z-movies whose main point was to offend. Troma productions conjoined the punk zeitgeist with all other possible zeitgeists which at the time already deserved an exorcism. Tits, violence, racist, sexist, and homophobic jokes (or jokes about sexism, violence, racism and homophobia depending on your perspective), slapstick splatter and a general bad taste were the agenda and were so exaggerated that the films became a parody of themselves and the genre. In many respects THE TOXIC AVENGER is a predecessor to today’s mainstream cinema. Super hero films are more common onscreen today than they were in the 1980s. Troma’s self-ironic fan boy humor has made its way into big productions just like the practice of copying unrestrained gags, settings, and entire scenes from old movies.
THE TOXIC AVENGER is about a harmless idiot who lands in a drum of toxic waste and becomes an invincible avenger. More important than the moronic plot are the moronic camera angles and the moronic, juvenile jokes. There are people who think “TOXIE” is great, cult films etc. I personally find all the Troma productions as obnoxious, unbearable and completely mindless as a 14-year-old teenager with a bottle of coke and a vodka red bull. Over the years TOXIE has not only driven the horror scene into the garbage can, but its terrible aftermath can still be felt. If you really think you need to see it, perhaps you’ll get through it.
