The Girl with all the Gifts

Melanie is the most talented among the few children who developed signs of intelligence in spite of their infection with a zombie fungus. Her brain is the last hope for a small group of people who make their way through the infested lands.

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is the most original and exciting zombie film since [REC] and 28 DAYS LATER. This is all because of Colm McCarthy’s precise, perfectly-timed direction. McCarthy made the captivatingly realistic witch thriller OUTCAST in 2010 and has worked on prestige TV productions like Peaky Blinders and Sherlock afterwards. The film devises a plausible, clever, and absolutely horrifying scenario. Children are detained in a military facility, they are all around 12 years old. The safety measures are extremely strict. Their heads, hands, and feet are constrained to a wheelchair and teacher Ms. Justineau (Gemma Arterton) teaches them. Her best student is the lovely Melanie. But Melanie and the other children have an uncomfortable food preference: they eat living animals. They receive mealworms in the facility but they go into a frenzy whenever they smell human flesh. The children are intelligent special cases of an infection which has turned the majority of people into stupid zombies and they are guinea pigs who are used by Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close) to find a cure. When the facility is overrun by the infected, only a small group of soldiers with the teacher, the doctor, and Melanie manage to escape.
The idea of making a fungus out of the infection is the guiding principle of THE GIRL. The zombies are fast and aggressive but also have a standby mode where they stand firmly in place and form a kind of mycelium. The question which soon comes up is what part of Melanie’s brain is thinking, the fungus or the human. The final twist manages to be both consistent and surprising.
