The Evil Dead

Sam Raimi’s legendary 80s cult horror film that involves a cabin in the woods, teenagers, demons, and amazing play dough splatter effects was banned for decades and can finally be shown in German cinemas.

No, even though distributor Park Circus keeps writing it in their press release, EVIL DEAD is not “in German cinemas for the first time.” The Sam Raimi film had a successful German release a week before the 1984 Berlinale. The press was enthusiastic and young horror fans ran to Kant Kino and stepped out of the cinema into the cold completely exhausted and entertained. They had never seen anything like it. How did they manage to move the camera that way? We know how today: they bolted the camera onto a board, had ropes at each side, and ran across the forest with the board. This and the absurd play dough splatter effects were incredibly innovative at the time.

The film was confiscated in April 1984, two months after its release. EVIL DEAD became the main example for the idiotic “video nasty” debate. The decline of civilization was upon us because Raimi’s yellow blood came out of undead play dough heads. That was sexist somehow. The way nerdy hero Ash satirized traditional machoism went over their heads apparently. Well-respected indie distributor Prokino has been fighting to release EVIL DEAD for decades but as soon as some headway was made another hurdle would crop up. Things have gotten looser in the last four years and many horror classics of the 70s and 80s were finally released like SUSPIRIA, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and most recently OPERA. You have to see EVIL DEAD in the cinemas. We can only hope that banned films like MARTYRS, INSIDE, and FRONTIÈRE(S) will be removed from the banned list in 30 years.
