Macbeth

In his adaptation of “Macbeth“ Justin Kurzel (SNOWTOWN) fuses the damp grey realism of the Scottish highlands with the bold symbolism of Ridley Scott, 300, or GAME OF THRONES.

More

Just before daybreak. A troupe of dirty warriors in heavy linen shirts prepare for a battle in the Scottish highlands. There is nothing but muddy, wet, gray-green range as far as the eye can see. An equally filthy group of men await them on the other side. They clash in the morning and a thunderous, brutal massacre follows with dirt and blood splashing in slow motion and heavy weapons slowly entering heavy bodies. When the battle is over, three women and a little girl appear from the fog and prophesy that Macbeth, the leader of the victors, will one day be king. This is how Shakespeare’s death-saturated drama begins in which Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) is encouraged by his wife (Marion Cotillard) to get rid of the king and all of his potential rivals, gradually becoming crazy in the process.

Dirty, windswept realism collides with bold, symbolic stagings in Justin Kurzel’s MACBETH adaptation, similar to 300 or “Game of Thrones.” A slow, unrelenting, nerve-racking folk-industrial score accompanies the plot, condensed to only include the bare minimum. Dramatic, invasive sun beams cut the blue-gray foggy world and the blood-red and hellish sun rises over the devastation at the end. The result is a powerful panorama of murder and insanity that teeters on the absurd at the same time. All the killings and death for a measly piece of land where nothing can grow? All the suffering to trade a vassal’s tent for the ruler’s equally drafty, dark ruin?
