Long Shot

In terms of the comedy, LONG SHOT is like a road trip that starts out brilliantly but then the map gets lost.

At the end of a terrible day Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) has a chance meeting with his adolescent crush Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron). She also happens to be the U.S. Secretary of State and candidate for the 2020 presidential elections. Does clever but essentially overgrown teenager Fred have a chance with successful, sophisticated Charlotte?

The first half of LONG SHOT is pretty great. The term “romantic comedy” usually induces involuntary eye rolling. But I found this romantic comedy to be surprisingly refreshing in that neither the storyline nor the characters were stereotypical. I loved the casting, which includes O’Shea Jackson Junior as Fred’s best friend, Ravi Patel and June Diane Raphael, who play the Secretary of State’s right hand man and woman, Alexander Skarsgård as Justin Trudeau (but we’re not calling him Justin Trudeau), and Bob Odenkirk as a likable, because it’s Bob Odenkirk, Donald Trump counterpart.

The second half, is pure American cheese. So here’s the whine. First of all, at some seamless point the plot unravels and gets increasingly outlandish and unrealistic. This reminded me of writing essays in university, writing a careful, cogent introduction and a week of procrastination later, banging out the rest at 7am on the due date, completely cracked out on sleep deprivation, sugar, and caffeine. Second of all, there are very crisp commentaries in the beginning with respect to the struggle of women in politics and the farcical nature of U.S. elections. The messages later become diluted and muddled. Above all, things just get predictable in the way that American movies, especially comedies, can be. Nothing truly bad ever happens to anyone and if it does, you just know that in the end everything will not just be okay, it will be explosively happy.

In terms of the comedy, LONG SHOT is like a road trip that starts out brilliantly but then the map gets lost. It gradually wanders into the neighborhood of college boy humor, and then a tire goes flat.
