Logan Lucky

Steven Soderbergh’s scoundrel comedy LOGAN LUCKY is like a smaller OCEANS 11 set in working-class West Virginia and is all about the lovable, bizarre characters a la the Coen brothers.

Steven Soderbergh said he didn’t want to make films anymore and that he wanted to paint instead. But he’s back with the scoundrel comedy LOGAN LUCKY, a mini OCEANS 11 set in West Virginia’s working-class mileau and is all about the lovable, bizarre characters ala the Coen brothers. Channing Tatum plays construction worker Jimmy Logan who has lost his job because of his busted knee. He plans a heist at a NASCAR race in North Carolina with his younger brother Clyde (Adam Driver), a one-armed barkeeper but in order to get the loot, the Logans need help from explosives expert Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) who is unfortunately sitting in prison…

There aren’t many contemporary filmmakers who oscillate between the mainstream and indie world as much as Steven Soderbergh. His filmography encompasses Hollywood cinema like ERIN BROCKOVICH and experiments like the GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE. Soderbergh’s cinema comeback is somewhere in between. The focus is on the surreal characters which the star ensemble (Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes, and Hilary Swank) interpret with a lot of zeal. The hilarious highlight is blonde Daniel Craig, who mocks his Bond image while wearing his striped prison uniform. The smooth comedy also gets charm points for its pop culture references about Game of Thrones and Rihanna as well as Soderbergh’s strong style. Soderbergh arranges his characters in artificially lit group images and dispenses with the typical quick cuts so common in action comedies and so his actor’s timing and smart dialogue are right in the foreground.
