Janis: Little Girl Blue

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE is a rather conventional yet moving portrait of rock icon Janis Joplin.

More

Country singer Lucinda Williams wrote a song, “Difficult Child” about the great Janis Joplin and it goes: “I was a difficult child, right from the start.” Director Amy Berg shows that the blues icon offended the conservative Texan town she was from in her youth. Joplin was born in Port Arthur in 1943 and stood out like a sore thumb early on: wearing tight clothes, with a beatnik-like hairstyle, and supporting the integration of blacks. She was bullied by guys in her class and “angry men.” It’s no wonder that the singer with the distinct, and yes, somewhat enervating gravelly voice took to California, where her intense and short career (with songs like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Mercedes Benz”) took its course. She soon met Bob Dylan and told him that she will be famous one day. Fame wasn’t an easy thing for her to adjust to, like many other artists. She died of a heroin overdose at 27. It’s wonderful and fitting that Chan Marshall (Cat Power), who has a similarly unique voice, reads out Janis’ letters to her family in the film. This and other partially very touching original documents are why LITTLE GIRL BLUE leaves you feeling like you got to know Janis Joplin a bit more. That isn’t a small feat for a fairly conventional artist portrait – and is less unsettling than last summer’s AMY which was running the risk of being as voyeuristic as what it was criticizing.
