Jim Jarmusch’s documentary GIMME DANGER about The Stooges, the “greatest rock ‘n roll band of all time,” according to Jarmusch, is an astoundingly conventional, perhaps deliberately relaxed rock documentary, that contrasts their legendary wild performances. James Osterberg aka Iggy Pop, old but fit and cleaned up, sits on a chair and happily tells the story of his loud band that broke up right before achieving success numerous times and only came together for a triumphant comeback tour eons later. There’s archival footage of concerts from the early 70s (unfortunately not many) and the revival tours (many of them) and conversations with surviving band members Scott Asheton (drums) and James Williamson (guitar on “Raw Power” and many Iggy solo albums). The first Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton died of a heart attack in 2009, bassist Dave Alexander died in the mid 70s. Stooges fans know everything that's in the film. The Stooges were the loudest American band in the late 60s/early 70s along with MC5 and are seen as the fathers of punk. When Iggy says “I helped wipe out the sixties!” he is undoubtedly right. A song shouldn’t have more than 25 words according to Iggy: the opposite of the sprawling metaphors coming out of the songwriters of the 60s. There’s no hope for a better world in Iggy’s songs, being broken is fiercely affirmed. “It’s 1960 okay, war across the USA, that’s another year for me and you, another year with nothing to do.” Generations have tried to see what it feels like to put cigarettes out on their chest after watching Iggy’s shows. Speaking from experience: not very good.
