Incident in a Ghost Land

Author Vera returns to the house where she was attacked by intruders as a child. Or maybe she wasn‘t. Pascal Laugier creates a bizarre game with reality and fantasms in his new horror film.

More

Pascal Laugier is one of the most important horror film directors of the last decade, but since his masterpiece MARTYRS (2008), which is still banned in Germany, Laugier has only made one film, the great political psychological thriller THE TALL MAN that came out on DVD here and wasn‘t bloody enough for horror fans. He was removed as the director of the HELLRAISER remake for unknown reasons. Laugier‘s new film GHOSTLAND is more traditional than MARTYRS and THE TALL MAN. There are elements of a classic home invasion thriller and the villains are old-fashioned, reactionary, and monstrous: a fat, sadistic mentally handicapped person named “ogre“ and an equally sadistic trans woman. The characters would be idiotic if Laugier hadn‘t created a bizarre game with reality and fantasy. Protagonist Vera is 15 years old at the beginning of the film and likes to think up horror stories and loves H.P. Lovecraft. The house she has just moved in with her mother and sister which looks like it came right out of Vera‘s imagination is infiltrated by these villains. Years later she is a successful writer who is processing her trauma through her work. Horrible elements invade her reality at times, like a call from her sister crying in panic. Vera returns to the house where her mother and sister still live. More plot cannot be revealed, since Laugier keeps playing with notions of reality. There‘s a kind of resolution at the end, but you can‘t be too certain about it. Reality is always worse than fantasy in Laugier‘s films, but you shouldn‘t underestimate it either.
