Ghost in the Shell

Remake of the Japanes anime classic, with impressive visuals and a sharp turn in the philosophy.

More

The perspective of the new GHOST has radically altered even if you put the casting debate over hiring white actors to play Japanese anime characters aside. 1995’s GHOST IN THE SHELL seemed like the film version of Donna Haraways’s feminist “Cyborg Manifesto” wherein Haraway created a new ironic myth of the cyborg as a constructed multigendered social being. GHOST was a cybernetic utopia in which cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi decided to give up the rest of her human identity to evolve into a virtual network. Her adversary and later ally was a genderless cyber being. A year before that Mosaic (Mozilla Firefox today) became the first web browser and the dream of artificial network intelligence seemed to be within reach. Today it seems clear that the network mostly led to cartels, cat videos, and Nazis, but no real intelligence.

Major has no name in the new version, Motoko Kusanagi is dead from the beginning. Like Data in START TREK and ROBOCOP, Major searches for her human identity. Her adversary is not an evolved network but just another experiment from the corporation that also produced Major – and undoubtedly a man. The utopia is over and Hollywood rehashes the same old story of the importance of becoming human. Apart from that the film often looks great. The impressive water color backgrounds in the old GHOST have been replaced by hologram-charged hi-tech city landscapes and the 3D effects are the best the technology has to offer. The new GHOST is entertaining and suspenseful. The philosophy, however, is quite depressing but perhaps the time for cyber utopias is over.
