Pet Sematary

Thirty years after Mary Lambert's film adaptation of King’s novel, PET SEMATARY rises again. But something is off about it.

More

In a boggy forest in Stephen King’s Maine there is a cemetery in which whatever is buried there, four-legged or bipedal, comes back to life, but not at all like it was before.

Thirty years after the 1989 film adaptation of King’s novel, PET SEMATARY has been resurrected. Doctor Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz), daughter Ellie (Jeté Laurence), toddler Gage, and cat Church move to a small town from the big city for a new beginning that may well be the end for the Creed family. It all starts when Louis brings back the family pet after it had been killed by a car. He just can’t stop there, despite urgent warnings from people in this world and from those beyond.

The 1989 version left big shoes to fill, especially for the Creeds’ neighbor Jud, played by the iconic Fred Gwynne (THE MUNSTERS), and Miko Hughes as Gage. John Lithgow’s Jud demonstrates that there’s more success in going off on a different route than attempting to reproduce the original to a T. PET SEMATARY (2019) leaves less room for the character Gage to be remarkable. It allows Jeté Laurence, however, to take Ellie to a new level.

This 2019 remix includes some small changes compared to the 1989 adaptation, and some very big ones as well that allow the plot to take unexpected turns. While these alterations prevent the remake from being a campy imitation of the original, I’m not sure any of them warranted a retelling of this story. PET SEMATARY (2019) is entertaining. It’s creepy. It’s got the right amount of the jumpy moments some people enjoy in a horror film. But like the cover of the Ramones song used as them for the earlier film, which plays during the credits of the new one, it just doesn’t have the same kick.

When it comes to this reanimation I’m with Jud: Sometimes dead is better.
