A Date for Mad Mary

Mary, who everyone believes is “mad“, gets released from jail shortly before her best friend Charlene gets married. She tries to get a date for the wedding, but her rough demeanor puts everyone off – except Jess.

We are in Ireland. The weather is bad, the colors are grey. Mary ( Séana Kerslake) is in her early 20s and is quite the character: taciturn, aggressive, and easily irritable. You shouldn‘t mess with Mary, that‘s clear right away. In the beginning of the film she is released from prison after being there for 6 months for battery. When her mother picks her up from the Drogheda station, all Mary says is “finally.“ She would‘ve preferred it if her best friend Charlene had come, but she is in the middle of her wedding preparations. Mary is a bridesmaid because they‘re old friends, but when Mary comes to the fitting with jeans and a schlubby shirt, Charlene clearly has her doubts. Everyone would prefer it if Mary were as invisible as possible. Mary doesn‘t see it that way. She tries to get a date for the wedding at the last minute because she was asked not to bring anyone. The next days consist of calls on Charlene‘s mailbox, half-hearted attempts to write the damn wedding speech, and a series of unsuccessful dates. All the men flee. The only one who can handle Mary‘s gruff charm is the wedding photographer and singer Jess…

A DATE FOR MAD MARY is a lovely and award-winning debut. It is at once a realistic story of a late and clumsy coming of age and a gentle portrait of a first lesbian experience. Director Darren Thornton uses the elements of a wedding comedy: the dress, the best friends, the wedding speech, the crisis, and the reconciliations and brings it down in a sympathetic and realistic way with a healthy dose of Irish drizzle.
