Der Boden unter den Füßen

Lola is a business consultant. When others go home, she continues working. She prefers smooth surfaces and expensive clothes over confronting her sister Conny, who is being looked after in a closed psychiatric ward in her home in Vienna.

More

Lola is a business consultant. Her life is set in the generic non-spaces of the international business world. Airports, hotel rooms, partially furnished temporary offices. Her conversation partners are her business partners and even they‘re often not present. Her lover is her boss Elise. When the others go home, Lola keeps working, the smooth surfaces and expensive clothes are preferable over the confrontation with her sister Conny, who is who is being looked after in a closed psychiatric ward after a suicide attempt in her home in Vienna. Lola prefers not to know exactly what her condition is. Lola says to the attending doctor that “she was wrong about the dosage, that happens to her often.“ He isn‘t convinced, “she took 120 pills.“

Here the neat career sister, there the psycho sister who can barely make it on her own. This separation, which is incredibly important to Lola, is something that Marie Kreutzer gradually softens over the course of the film. Lola keeps getting pleading calls from Conny. She is being held there against her will, they‘re trying to kill her. She doesn‘t do anything for a long time, because the paranoia fits perfectly to Conny‘s ill image. Lola even pretends to be in a meeting in order not to talk to her anymore. When she does take the time to call back, she discovers that Conny doesn‘t have access to a phone anymore. Did Conny run away or is Lola hallucinating? Is her boss Elise trying to ditch her or is that just paranoia? In this ultra cool, scaled down narrative, Kreutzer keeps interspersing insecurities like this and deliberately let them come to a head. What‘s actually going on remains unclear, but Lola‘s psyche gradually becomes the one which you have to worry about.
