Contains spoilers. Unlike many other films that have buried the radical left tradition in recent years, the crowd-funded film CODENAME JENNY, made by students of the self-organised film school Filmarche and director Samira Fansa (VERDRÄNGUNG HAT VIELE GESICHTER), wants to tie into that. Samira Fansa is also known due to the paint bomb she threw onto green foreign minister Joseph Fischer who declared they were joining the war in Bosnia and the NATO military foreign assignment during the party‘s federal party conference in 1999. There are good reasons why left-wing filmmakers are looking for different forms than classic narrative cinema. Classic Hollywood cinema is a cinema of affect and isn‘t well-suited for political ideas and strategies. CODENAME JENNY tells the story of a young woman. “codename Jenny,“ whose mother died of cancer when she was young, is in her mid-twenties, and lives with her dad when she joins a militant autonomous group that plans two attacks: blowing up the storage facility of a chemical group and the Vattenfall headquarters which is meant to be destroyedEuropean border security as well. When the second attack is about to fail, “Jenny‘s“ father takes charge. He used to be active in the revolutionary cell/Rota Zora with his dead wife and looks up old friends because he is worried about his daughter at first but then gets entangled in the revolutionary fervour again when he meets his old comrades. Up till now, it‘s a different perspective than most 68er films. But the young activists seem just as conceited, humorless, and daft and the old ones reproduce a very bizarre kind of macho pathos. There‘s some interesting references to leftist history, like the radical change that was caused by the death of RZ member Gerd Albartus.
