The Station

A thawing glacier in the Alps frees evil microbe parasites with the ability to transform into any creature they come into contact with and turn them into monster chimeras. An entertaining attempt at an Austrian creature movie.

In a recent survey international film critics named John Carpenter’s THE THING as the best horror film of all time. This film marked the moment when mutants in snowy Alaska replaced supressed gay priests terrorising small girls and THE EXORCIST as the dominant theme in the horror film genre. In THE STATION Berlin director Marvin Kren combines the plot of THE THING with a little bit of ALIEN and a number of other standards and transplants it to the German Alps. In his film about zombies in a Berlin tenement (RAMMBOCK), Marvin Kren had delivered one of the few respectable contributions to the horror genre in Germany.
THE STATION is a good-humoured epidemic horror film with mountain creatures. A mutant virus is exposed from a retreating glacier infecting the local wildlife and turning animals and people into hybrid mutant creatures. The first crossbreed mutation is a hybrid of a fox, maggot, and a black beetle but the one that makes the most noise is a variation of an ibex with a bit of bear and a fly. THE STATION keeps to many of the important rules for a successful horror film: the least talented members of the ensemble and the snappy scientists are the first to be mangled, a dying dog is sadder than a dead bodyguard. When a “competency team” headed by a sprightly state minister arrive at the scene of horror, the plot resembles a political crisis situation of the Grand Coalition – only with more blood. The film’s strongest moments are when the camera shots linger on the bizarre formation of the mountains as if in any given moment the mountains would spring to life and pounce on the world from above. What actually then happens.
