Brazilian director José Padilha has already dealt with the private morals of ambivalent figures in his TROPA DE ELITE films (2007 and 2010) and the TV series “Narcos“ (2015). His screen adaptation of the hijacking of an Air France plane on June 27th 1976 by two members of the “Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine“ and the German members of the “Revolutionary Cells“ Winfried Böse and Brigitte Kuhlmann is most interested in the role that Winfried Böse had in the hijacking. Critics were rather disappointed after its premiere at the Berlinale was rather disappointed: ENTEBBE isn‘t the fast-paced action film that people expected of Padilha. Action films about the Israeli commando troop that landed on July 4th in Entebbe and freed the hostages started filming just a few weeks after the events in the US and Israel. Padilha isn‘t interested in the Israeli commandos. Their actions were more complex than what the film shows. At least the controversial first shot of leading officer Jonathan Netanyahu (the older brother of the current Israeli prime minister) is included. Padilha tries to crawl inside the soul of Winfried Böse during the drama at the Entebbe airport that lasted for days. Böse‘s documented and undocumented actions were the origin of the anti-semitism accusations that have been thrown at the German left outside the parliament. Daniel Brühl plays Böse as a naive guy who doesn‘t really understand what he has gotten himself into. The real scandal, the division made between the hostages into Israeli – or, according to some sources, Jewish people and other hostages leads to a kind of breakdown of Böse‘s self-image and worldview. A more precisce approach to the events would have done the film some good. As it stands, ENTEBBE is more of a psychodrama than a docu-drama.
